As Board member and Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee in Royal Kunia
for the past three years, I have become quite attuned to the issues facing our
community and Leeward Oahu. When we learned of a threat to the preservation
status of land in the middle of our neighborhood by a mainland developer, I organized
a Government Affairs Committee and worked with our State legislators to draft a Bill to
condemn the land, and testified in front of a Senate Hearing Committees to support
this Bill. The developers have now put the land up for sale.
Realizing I could make a difference, my committee and I then approached the
Honolulu Board of Education about getting a new elementary school built in Royal
Kunia. Our mission is to bring a school that was once high on Honolulu's priority list
back to the forefront. I have also organized a Traffic Calming Subcommittee to
address the traffic issues that face our community.
Regarding light rail, there is clearly a global movement toward public transportation,
though I do believe that the fate of the rail system should rest with the voters, as this
will be the single largest project in the history of the City and County of Honolulu.
If I’m able to address all of these issues as a community volunteer, then I certainly
look forward to magnifying the positive impact by serving the people of District 9 as an
elected official.
With much aloha, Lance Widner
